30 day Food Drive

Dear Neighbors,

Strawberry Park Neighborhood Association is partnering with Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties to bring hope, relief and security to our neighbors struggling with hunger.  From November 23  to December 23, our Holiday Food and Fund Drive will help the Food Bank meet more of the growing need in our community.

Your support allows Second Harvest to continue to provide for the 1 in 10 people in Santa Clara and San Mateo County we're serving each month.  Now is the time to take action! Here's how to help:

DONATE FUNDS: Visit www.Donate.SHFB.org to make a donation and see how Second Harvest can stretch your dollar.  Choose "Community Group" and "Strawberry Park Neighborhood"

Use our Virtual Food Drive or mail checks made payable to Second Harvest Food Bank to 750 Curtner Avenue, San Jose, CA 95125.  Be sure to include our DRIVE ID NUMBER 201113034 with all offline donations.

The average cost for donors to fill up one food collection barrel is $240.  If donated to SHFB, that same $240 could fill up 3 barrels full of nutritious food, essentially tripling the impact of your gift.

annual 19

The 19th Annual Adult Services Resource Faire will be a day of celebrating the interests and passions of one of Santa Clara County’s fasting growing populations.  It will be a beacon for professionals seeking services for their clients.  It will be the place where older adults can learn more about their community, mingle with their peers and walk away with advice and knowledge for their everyday life.  We invite you to come join us!

MISSION STATEMENTThe purpose of the Annual Adult Services Resource Faire is to provide information, free health screenings, resources, and networking opportunities for senior citizens, adult services professionals, and the general public.

The Burglary Basics:
The MOST important thing YOU can do is CALL THE POLICE to report a CRIME or any SUSPICIOUS activity. You have to be the eyes of your neighborhood. And remember you can always remain a pair of anonymous eyes!
Light up your residence, lock your doors at all times, and call the Police when you see something suspicious.
For additional crime prevention tips or to arrange for a crime prevention specialist to conduct a neighborhood association or group meeting contact the San Jose Police Crime Prevention Unit at: 408 277-4133.

  • Make your home look occupied, and make it difficult to break in.
  • Lock all outside doors and windows before you leave the house or go to bed. Even if it is for a short time, lock your doors.
  • Leave lights on when you go out. If you are going to be away for a length of time, connect some lamps to automatic timers to turn them on in the evening and off during the day.
  • Keep your garage door closed and locked.
  • Don't allow daily deliveries of mail, newspapers or flyers build up while you are away. Arrange with the Post Office to hold your mail, or arrange for a friend or neighbor to take them regularly.
  • Arrange for your lawn to be mowed if you are going away for an extended time.
  • Check your locks on doors and windows and replace them with secure devices as necessary.
  • Pushbutton locks on doorknobs are easy for burglars to open. Install deadbolt locks on all your outside doors.
  • Sliding glass doors are vulnerable. Special locks are available for better security.
  • Other windows may need better locks. Check with a locksmith or hardware store for alternatives.

Don't Tempt a Thief:

  • Lawn mowers, barbecues and bicycles are best stored out of sight
  • Always lock your garden sheds and garages.
  • Use curtains on garage and basement windows.
  • Never leave notes on your door such as "Gone shopping."

  Locks...Get the Best:

  • No lock, regardless of its quality, can be truly effective. Key-in dead bolt locks provide minimum security. Ask a locksmith for advice on your situation.
  • Change locks immediately if your keys are lost or stolen.
  • When moving into a new home, have all locks changed.

Targeting the Outside:

  • Have adequate exterior lighting. A motion-sensitive light is recommended for backyards.
  • Trim trees and shrubs so that they cannot be used as hiding places for intruders.
  • Make sure your door hinges are on the inside.

Windows:

  • Most windows can be pinned for security.
  • Drill a 3/16" hole on a slight downward slant through the inside window frame and halfway into the outside frame - place a nail in the hole to secure the window.

Alarms:

  • An alarm system is excellent for home security. It provides peace of mind to homeowners, especially while on vacation. There is a wide variety of alarm systems on the market.
  • Make several inquiries to different companies for the best security system available to you.
  • If you have a home alarm system, use it! Activate your alarm system - Alarm systems are only useful when you remember to activate them.
  • Many individuals have alarm systems but do not arm them because it is inconvenient. Many burglars know this and will not be deterred by a window sticker or sign indicating that the home has an alarm system.

If Your Home Is Broken Into:
If you come home to find an unexplained open/broken window or door:

  • Do not enter - the perpetrator may still be inside.
  • Use a neighbor's phone to call police.
  • Do not touch anything or clean up until the police have inspected for evidence.
  • Write down the license plate numbers of any suspicious vehicles.
  • Note the descriptions of any suspicious persons.

Other precautions you should take:

  • Never leave keys under doormats, flowerpots, mailboxes or other "secret" hiding places -- burglars know where to look for hidden keys.
  • Keep a detailed inventory of your valuable possessions, including a description of the items, date of purchase and original value, and serial numbers, and keep a copy in a safe place away from home - this is a good precaution in case of fires or other disasters. Make a photographic or video record of valuable objects, heirlooms and antiques. Your insurance company can provide assistance in making and keeping your inventory.
  • Trim your shrubbery around your home to reduce cover for burglars.
  • Be a good neighbor. If you notice anything suspicious in your neighborhood, call 9-1-1 immediately.
  • Mark your valuables with your driver's license number with an engraver you can borrow from your precinct. Marked items are harder for a burglar to dispose of and easier for police to recover.
  • Form a Neighborhood Watch Group. We can help you work with your neighbors to improve security and reduce risk of burglary.
  • Consider installing a burglar alarm system.

Car Burglaries
Tips on how to avoid car break-ins:

  •  Do not leave valuables in plain view:
(GPS devices, lap tops, PDA's, cell phones, MP3's, wallets, purses)
  •  Do not leave windows or sunroof open.
  •  Do not leave doors unlocked.
  •  Do not leave keys in the vehicle.
  •  Do not leave the garage door opener in plain view.
  •  Do not leave out items with personal information.
  • Do not move valuable items to the trunk while in public view.
  • Slow Down and use common sense before you leave your car.

You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water, and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least three days. Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster, but they cannot reach everyone immediately. You could get help in hours, or it might take days. In addition, basic services such as electricity, gas, water, sewage treatment, and telephones may be cut off for days, or even a week or longer.

Recommended Items to Include in a Basic Emergency Supply Kit:

  • Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
  • Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger

Help Marsha to Help the Homeless

I read a small report in SJ mercury News about the Homeless shelters and the cold!

I have a friend staying there for the moment( veteran's section) and: the entire place is in need of men's clothes..clean , winter coats, and all else you may have.

All sizes as some of these men have only the clothes on their backs. backpacks(adult), a

nd duffle bags..also personal products such as shavers, soap toothbrushes, socks, toothpaste, wash clothes etc. large gallon plastic bags to make ind. packages up for them.

There is a BIG need for food as there are more people  being welcomed todayand next Monday. This center cooks for and feeds all of the centers mentioned.

There is a call out for coffee as they only had enough for 2 days. but any boxed, canned dry food would be greatly appreciated. Anyone out there work for a grocery store that throws away expired food? They will take it if it's still good.....Fresh poultry, meats are welcomed as long as they can be transported there without sitting around...

I go out there a few times a week in the morning and late afternoon to pick up friend to work for me....If you have food please email , so I can tell you when to drop off at my house, so it won't sit around all day....

For clothes etc.  also email me to make arrangements for that too.and there is a need for womens things and children but more on that later.....

thanks Marsha Benson VP SPNA

If this has a good response I may need help! thanks

call me if you need to 781-6173

Protect Your Identity

The third week of October is National "Protect Your Identity Week."  Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States. Identity theft is a form of fraud where someone uses your personal identifying information, such as your name, Social Security Number, credit card number, or other financial account information, to access resources or obtain credit and other benefits in your name. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that approximately nine million Americans have their identities stolen each year.

One of the best ways to prevent this crime is to shred your sensitive documents. I am partnering with District Attorney Dolores Carr and Cintas Document Management to put on the City of San Jose's first ever Shred-A-Thon.  Cintas will bring their shredding truck for residents to shred their personal documentation on-site. Shredding is FREE to the public!

Due to recent budget cuts, the San Jose Fire Department has been forced to make some very difficult decisions; one of these being the elimination of our Public Education Program. This action, along with the numerous recent fires in our neighborhoods, has moved us to actively seek ways to better inform the people we serve about what we do, how we operate, and the actions they can take to help themselves stay safe. We strongly feel that establishing a direct link to the community can help us serve and protect, and participating in neighborhood associations like yours is one of the ways we can accomplish this.

08:30 PM

2010 brings in SPNA Driveway Gatherings

This year we are going to try something new called Driveway Gatherings. One address will host a gathering by inviting others to join them for a few hours in their driveway. They may serve drinks and snacks or ask others to bring them or both, The host gets to make the rules and decisions about their gathering. You can pick a theme or not have a theme at all, be creative
and be fun, this is a great way to get to know your neighbors, You get to decide which blocks around your house you will flyer and we will print and provide the flyers to you. We can also advertise on this website and through both Yahoo! Groups as well to help spread the word. The purpose is to get to know each other a little bit better through socialization. Just think of all the networking you might do as well.

Restructuring Block Captain Routes

SPNA will be restructuring our Block Captain routes before our January 2010 meeting. You can choose your route, how large, how small, even just one block if that's all you want. Please stake your territory, first come first serve. If you are already a block captain and wish to keep your entire regular route that's fine too. ALSO, We are going to make being a block
captain more fun in 2010 and more rewarding for you. YES, LESS WORK & MORE FUN because we appreciate your hard work and value your opinion. Not a Block Captain yet? Contact Patty Brooks
President@Strawberryparkna.org (408)421-7578 iif you would like to a Block Captain for your street.

Here is an email received on behalf of SPNA.

My name is Ka-Fung Koo; both my brother and I attended UC Davis. I graduated in '07 and Ka-Tye graduated in '09. We started a project shortly after we graduated to help people save money on their groceries and realize that eating right - even when you're on a budget - is an achievable goal.

Launched in mid-September 2009, our project is called "Ajaxo.com" - the first free search engine for groceries. Based in San Jose, at present we have over 100 retailers in more than 43,000 physical locations spanning more than 8,000 cities from coast to coast.

Families can search, compare, and identify hundreds of groceries on sale in their community. They can find groceries, create shopping lists, publish/share lists and great finds - altogether Ajaxo.com can save a typical family of four at least 40% WITHOUT using coupons. We hope that with our project we can lead by example - showing people that you *can* eat right and stay on a budget. Families can plan out a week's meals, create shopping lists, and even reverse-search from what's on sale to find recipes to make!

The benefits of our project are tangible. For a single person living on their own (i.e. the most likely case with students going into their 2nd year), you can create grocery lists covering lunch and dinner for two weeks for just $20/week! Applied to a typical family of four, it can save them about $200/month. This data was taken from a 2-month study we did that focused primarily on fresh meats and produce with little to no use of processed foods. The study was performed in and around the Silicon Valley area. We subsequently replicated these results in various locations across the country from Los Angeles to South Bend, IN to NYC.

Ajaxo.com is a free service. It does not require registration or sign-up to use. We don't tell consumers where to go, but rather, we try to give them all the information publicly available to help them make the best educated decision on their purchases. It's my sincere hope that our project can help you, your friends, and your family - even if it's just a little bit.

San Jose 2010 State of the City Address

From Pete Constant's February Newsletter

"I am pleased to announce that Ed and Patty Brooks from
the Strawberry Park Neighborhood Association have been
selected from our district to receive the Good Neighbor Award
.Ed and Patty Brooks have been District 1 residents for 15 years.
They founded the Strawberry Park Neighborhood Association
in 2007, and are currently serving as President and Treasurer of
the association. The Brooks' have served as valuable community
leaders in many ways. They organized a Strawberry Park
Emergency Preparedness Fair and Blood Drive where more than
300 residents received emergency preparedness training and
45 units of blood were collected. They also created the website
YourHelpList.com to help Strawberry Park neighbors and
District 1 residents locate resources during difficult economic
times. Ed and Patty have not only worked tirelessly for the
benefit of the neighbors in their own association, but they have
been generous with their time and wisdom in supporting those
outside of their immediate boundaries. The Brooks' were
instrumental in helping to establish the nearby Stevens Creek
Neighborhood Association. Thank you Ed and Patty for
everything that you have done and continue to do for District 1 …
you certainly are Good Neighbors!"
